Does anyone else when they are intrigued by a car compelled to wait and talk to the owner about it? If so, how do you go about it?
I always feel compelled to do so, but rarely know how to go about it except tell them I like their car and hope they care.

I usually say something nice about their car and bring up some detail as a talking point of sorts. If they are nice, it usually works out.

You just kinda wait there and then the owner walks out and sees you looking at it. Normally I would say something along the lines of "hey is this your car?" and if they respond yes I just take it from there. If the person isn't a dick about it, they don't mind unless they are in a bit of a rush. People generally like to talk about their possessions that get praise. Ask questions about it like their favorite parts of it and if they have anything done to it. It is just straight forward really. Not really anything special because it is just a normal conversation. It would be a different story if you were trying to get the owner to take you on a ride or something in which case there are very few people who would say yes to that for a complete stranger.

I usually ask about the specs. It shows that usually know something about said car that an average person might not know. Avoid asking obvious questions.
Example: Hey nice car, is it the 3.0 liter?

Thanks for the tips. I've only ever done this once, and the guy was old so he talked quite a while. In fact he talked to me first. Ended up getting to sit in his car... BMW Z4 or something. Supposedly one of the only 4 hardtop versions in the US.

That would be a good starting place for rooting out the enthusiasts from richies/show ponies... thanks for the tip

People generally love to talk about themselves(and by virtue, their cars), so if you seem interested, most people will at least humor you for a conversation. Some people are just not talkative/are assholes though, so if they don't really talk, don't take it personally.
Carry a camera. If you are taking pics and showing interest; they are usually more likely to talk. Plus, photography will help you look for little details that may make a good conversation starter.

The two car clubs I was in on either side of the country have stories of me politely chasing down unacquainted members through traffic to talk. Made me a great car sales consultant.
Introducing myself to the VR6 Corrado owner after keeping up in my Audi CQ led to me being in a wedding/ gaining my bestest Colorado buddies so its always worth a try.

nope, hyper introversion. I can't even say "nice car" if they are standing right there and no further interaction will be required.

I compliment them on their car and that usually starts the conversation. Most owners of powerful or beautiful cars love to talk about them.

Well the one time I hit it off with someone (look at other reply to someone of mine with a pic) it was raining and I had my fancy dancy camera in a shopping bag to protect it while I took pictures. Thanks for the tip, and I am seeing a few ways I could've talked to that guy a bit longer.

I could so see this happening to me if I could get over my self imposed awkwardness. Lovely story, and thanks.

That's where I am atm. I've only ever talked to one guy... but I got to sit in the car... and he revved the engine... and he sped off... perhaps you should try again sometime.

I compliment them on their car and ask some basic questions like what engine and any mods etc. If they are a real car guy it just goes from there, if not then i thank them for talking to me for a second and go about my day

Me too. I go to shows all of the time, bring my kids and everything, but never really say anything to anyone else.
